Mahatma Phule Market, commonly known to Mumbaikers as Crawford Market, is an old heritage building located at the north end of Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus, formerly known as V.T. station. Crawford Market was named for the first Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai, Arthur Crawford but its name was changed to Mahatma Phule Market after India’s Independence.

Crawford Market is one of the biggest wholesale markets in Mumbai and is the ideal place to buy the freshest fruits and vegetables. Not only do you get a large variety of regular vegetables but also many exotic selections like broccoli and zucchini, fresh herbs like oregano and kaffir lime leaves as well as salad ingredients such as rocket leaves, chinese lettuce and brussel sprouts. The best fruits of the season are sold at affordable prices and are definitely cheaper than those available at any local vegetable and fruit vendor in Mumbai.
The market is also famous stores that sell imported good such as chocolates, cheeses, sauces, cereals, shampoos, perfumes and other toiletries. Paper and Cane products are also found in large varieties. Crawford Market is also the main source of all kinds of baking goods like moulds, yeast, cake gels, cooking chocolates, and liquid glucose as well as decorative items like sprinkles and chocolate chips.
If you are looking for ingredients to make a gourmet meal, look no further than Crawford Market. Since I entered the food business, this colorful market has become the source of all my supplies.
